WICKED - Branching Out/Egin

Branching Out/Egin will develop and strengthen the WICKED (Woodland Intiatives - a Catalyst for Kids' Education and Development) Pilot working model by utilising the woodland resource as a tool to develop the personal, social and vocational skills of marginalised young people, aged 16 - 25 years, living in rural areas.

The aim of Branching Out/Egin is to enable disengaged young people to develop the confidence and skills to follow pathways to employment and become active members of their community.

Through hands-on workshops and activities the Project objectives are to help young people to:

  • Improve their confidence and social well-being;
  • Improve their vocational skills;
  • Improve their career development and employment opportunities; and
  • Improve their awareness of the environment.

Branching out / EginDue to the high risk nature of the work (using sharp hand tools in remote locations), the ratio of supervision is high - 1 Tutor to 4 young people. The high ratio of supervision allows Tutors to focus on addressing the personal needs, as well as the practical learning needs, of each volunteer.

Participants will be provided with - Personal Protective Equipment and tools, transport and (on production of receipts) the cost of lunch. Tir Coed will facilitate the delivery of workshops, ensuring that Health & Safety requirements, Risk Assessments and First Aid certificates are in place.

Tir Coed links up with other land-based organisations, such as the Wildlife Trust, the Woodland Trust, Forestry Commission Wales, Countryside Council for Wales and community woodland groups. Tir Coed does not own sites, but rather works in partnership with the above, as well as private woodland owners, to enhance and maintain woodland sites and Nature Reserves that have public access.
